Sometimes, when I'm out shopping for kids' gifts, I just find myself just staring, completely uninspired, at aisles and aisles of stuff. It's rare to find a completely unique gift that is:
a) fun
b) educational and
c) sustainable
but, the Back to the Roots Oyster Mushroom Kit is all of the above.
My sister bought this mushroom kit for my son's birthday, and she was so excited to give it to him. As soon as I went on their website and watched their TED video, I was sold. I truly admire the way this company was born and their vision for a sustainable product. It makes me love the product even more.
This kit comes with everything you need to grow up to 1.5 pounds of pearl oyster mushrooms at home. Here are a few photos of our mushrooms.
I know... I know... They look a little scary at first. I don't even want to mention what I think this photo looks like. But, it's really cool to see these mushrooms grow from recycled coffee grounds. And, they grow fast too! When they first started growing, I swear, I could see a difference in their size from morning to night. They truly were growing right before our eyes.
This is what our at home mushroom kit looked like right before we harvested our mushrooms. I learned not to wait too long to harvest the mushrooms because they can dry out. So, as soon as you think they are ready, just go for it.
Also, this is a gift that keeps on giving because Back to the Roots has a wonderful campaign going on right now:
When you buy a mushroom kit and post a photo of it on the Back to the Roots facebook page, they will donate a mushroom kit to a school classroom of your choice!
Isn't this a cool product? Do you have any other great earth-friendly gift ideas for kids?
